Group Play concludes tonight and the teams that finish in 1st and 2nd place will qualify for the Gold Medal match on Thursday, 26 June at 6 PM (Mexico City Time). The winner of the Gold Medal match will qualify for the 2023 IHF World Championships next January in Poland and Sweden
Tonight’s matches are
- USA vs Cuba 4 PM (Mexico City Time)
- Mexico vs Greenland 6 PM (Mexico City Time)
Here are the applicable scenarios for each team
- USA: The USA will finish in 1st place regardless of the outcome of tonight’s matches
- Cuba: Cuba will finish in 2nd place if
- Cuba defeats the USA AND
- Greenland defeats Mexico AND
- Cuba places higher than Greenland in tiebreaker scenarios (see below)
- Mexico: Mexico will finish in 2nd place if
- Mexico defeats Greenland OR
- Mexico and Greenland Draw
- Greenland: Greenland will finish in 2nd place with 2 scenarios based on the outcome of the USA – Cuba Match
- Scenario 1) USA defeats Cuba or USA and Cuba Draw
- Greenland will finish in 2nd place if
- Greenland defeats Mexico
- Greenland will finish in 2nd place if
- Scenario 2) Cuba defeats USA
- Greenland will finish in 2nd place if
- Greenland defeats Mexico AND
- Greenland places higher than Cuba in Tiebreaker Scenarios (see below)
- Greenland will finish in 2nd place if
- Scenario 1) USA defeats Cuba or USA and Cuba Draw
Cuba – Greenland Tiebreakers
Should Cuba and Greenland both finish with 3 points the following tiebreakers apply
- Head to Head Points: The two teams played to a 27-27 draw
- Goal Differential in all Matches: Both teams are currently at -8 so whichever side wins by more goals in tonight’s matches will win this tiebreaker
- Goals Scored in all matches: If both teams win by the same number of goals, the next tiebreaker will be goals scored in all matches. Greenland currently is ahead 55 to 52
