The 2022 NACHC Men’s Jr Championship concluded yesterday with Cuba defeating the United States 36-23 in the Gold Medal match. Both teams were undefeated going into the contest, but Cuba dominated from the start taking an early 5-0 lead that they never relinquished. Cuba expanded the lead to 18-9 at the break. The second half was more of the same with the U.S. never really able to mount a comeback. Cuba was led in scoring by Maiko Vasques with 11 goals, with Ronaldo Almeida and Samuel Cordiez adding 6 goals each. The U.S. was led in scoring by Jakob Christiansen with 6 goals.
The Bronze Medal match was a French Department battle with Martinique easily defeating Guadeloupe 46-23 to take 3rd place. Earlier in the day Mexico came from behind to beat Greenland 28-26 and take 5th place in the competition.
The competition served as qualification for two follow on events. The tournament champions, Cuba, qualified for the IHF Trophy – Intercontinental Phase which will be played next year at a TBD time and location. And, both Cuba and the U.S. have qualified for the 2023 IHF Men’s Jr Handball World Championships in Germany/Greece from 20 June to 2 July.
