Cuba and Guadeloupe Sweep IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase for NACHC
Cuba and Guadeloupe celebrate a NACHC double win

The Men’s IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase Youth and Jr Championships took place in San Jose, Costa Rica, from 7 to 11 March. This competition featured the winners of IHF Trophy Continental tournaments from Africa, Europe, North America, South & Central America and Oceania. Representing the North American & Caribbean Handball Confederation (NACHC) were the winners of the NACHC IHF Trophy Championships (Jr– Cuba and Youth– Guadeloupe) held last year in Mexico City. Both teams represented the NACHC well as they both successfully won their respective championships

The NACHC was also represented by USA referees, Rafael Augusto/Kevin Poulet and NACHC Playing Rules and Referees (PRC) Chairman, Alejandro Martinez participated as an IHF Lecturer and Technical Delegate.

IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase (Youth Championship)

The tournament was a simple round robin and Guadeloupe finished on top with their only blemish a 32-32 draw vs Nigeria. Guadeloupe’s Yann’rick Danquin, who was the MVP of the NACHC tournament was the co-leading scorer for this tournament with 31 goals in 4 matches. Gustave Djorick had 24 and William Saha 21 goals for Guadeloupe. While Guadeloupe won the tournament as a Department of France they will not participate in the Youth World Championships this summer in Croatia. The NACHC will be represented by Mexico and the U.S. as they finished 2nd and 3rd behind Guadeloupe at the NACHC Championships last fall.

IHF Trophy InterContinental Phase (Jr Championship)

Cuba finished with a 3-0-1 record and thanks to a superior head to head goal differential vs Guinea and Great Britain took the Championship title. Cuban scoring was led by a trio of scorers who coincidentally each scored 33 goals for Cuba in their four matches: Maiko Vasquez, Ronaldo Almeida and Andro Gonzalez. The Cuban Jr team along with the U.S. will represent the NACHC at the Jr World Championships this summer in Greece/Germany.
